Men’s Varsity Eight Wins 2011 Bergen Cup

Philadelphia – For the first time in 31 years, the Drexel Dragons defeated Temple at the Bergen Cup Regatta. The men's varsity eight squad, in the Unnamed Empacher boat, edged the Owls' boat and finished with a time of 5:30.6. Drexel boats also claimed victories in the men's freshman eight, the men's pair and men's second varsity four races. 
Drexel's varsity eight win was the first uncontested victory in the race since 1980. The Dragons claimed the Bergen Cup for the first time since 2007, when Drexel won by default when Temple's boat was disqualified for a lane violation.
The men's varsity eight crossed the finish line at 5:30.6. Temple placed second with a time of 5:32.8 followed by La Salle. The winning The Unnamed Empacher boat featured coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Kurt Linton, Gregg Francis, Aleksandar Radovic, Lorenzo Albala, Michael Faust, Kyle Fabel, Timothy Drake, and bow Jacob Sloan.
The men's freshmen eight clocked in at 5:49.5 ahead of La Salle. The Peggy Greenawalt boat included coxswain Marc Smith, stroke John Pieper, Vanja Busic, Sebastian Ryan, Steven Miner, Ryan McSpedon, Brian Kissam and bow Ross Morris.
Stroke Liam O'Neill and bow Peter Schmidt dominated the men's pair event with a time of 6:36.7. The Dragons finished before Temple, La Salle, and Philadelphia University.
The men's second varsity four squad posted a top time of 6:25.9 ahead of host Saint Joseph's. The Oxholm boat featured coxswain Ashley Jordan, stroke Dylan Siegfried, Scott Nordsiek, Pete Rampulla and bow John Luciani.
