Philadelphia - In her final home match as a Dragon, senior Gozde Unkaya stepped up for a come-from-behind three-set victory at first singles and lead a strong performance by the Dragons in doubles as Drexel bested George Mason (16-12) 4-3. Zeynep Mafa and Alex Bell also picked up crucial victories at third and sixth singles for the Dragons (8-6) who close out the regular season at Delaware next weekend.
Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa opened doubles play with an 8-5 win over Lindsay Gray and Kiersten Pappas at first doubles. Unkaya and Bell came up with the point-clinching victory at third doubles with an 8-6 win over Allison Wingo and Brooke Blackwell.
Zeynep Mafa diapatched Mason's top singles player in victories, Allison Wingo, 6-3, 6-2 at third singles to garner Drexel's first singles point. After Emma Brook fell at fourth singles, the match hung in the balance with the Dragons holding leads in two of the remaining four sets.
Much to the chagrin of the Dragons, both matches in which they led, second and fifth singles, took unexpected turns. as Sonja Stosic and Elise Leizerovich both droppe their second sets.
Rookie Alex Bell took care of business in straight sets against Aryn Christman 6-3, 6-2 at sixth singles to give Drexel its third team point. The match pivoted in Drexel's favor when Unkaya, who had dropped the first set 6-3 against Pappas, battled her way back for a 6-3 win in the second set. She put away Pappas 6-0 in the third set to clinch the match for Drexel.
