Drexel Unveils Plans for New Squash Facilities

PHILADELPHIA - Director of Athletics Eric Zillmer and the Drexel Athletics Department will play host to the 2011 Delaware Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships this week, while at the same time unveiling a long-term investment in the sport at the University. Plans have been revealed for renovations to the Drexel squash courts, which will be home for the Dragons men's and women's squash teams as they make the jump to the varsity level for the 2011-12 academic year.
The plans depict five playing courts, complete with a team room and seating areas. The new courts will be located on the lower level of the Daskalakis Athletic Center. They are expected to be open by the end of the Dragons' first varsity season. Drexel will play its first varsity matches later next month. Former top-ranked player John White has been named the head coach for the Dragons as they enter the varsity ranks.
The U.S. Open Squash Championships, which will be held in the Drexel Rec Center and in a specially-constructed acrylic court in the main arena of the DAC, will open September 30 and wrap up on October 6. Qualifying matches begin Wednesday evening as John White and others attempt to play their way into the 32-player main draw on the men's side. The women's side will feature a 16-player main bracket.
