Williamsburg, Va. – Dartaye Ruffin scored a career-high 18 points at Drexel defeated William & Mary, 64-48, for its seventh straight win. The Dragons (15-5, 7-2 CAA) won in Kaplan Arena for the first time since 2006.
Drexel has struggled shooting over the years on the Tribe's home court, but on Monday, the Dragons shot 50 percent from the floor and made six of their 14 long-range attempts. William & Mary (4-17, 2-7) was never able to make a run in the second half as Drexel maintained a double-digit lead over the last 15 minutes of the game.
Ruffin was 5-for-6 from the floor and made all eight of his attempts from the line. The sophomore also had five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Damion Lee added 17 points and was 3-for-4 from deep. Frantz Massenat was also in double figures with 11 points and had six assists. Daryl McCoy scored nine points and was perfect from the floor in four attempts.
Samme Givens led the Dragons with eight rebounds. His fifth rebound of the night moved him past Frank Hassell from Old Dominion into 10th place on the Colonial Athletic Association's all-time rebound list.
Drexel started the first half out slowly, scoring just five points in the first six plus minutes. However, Drexel scored the next six points and extended its lead to as many as 10 in the first half. William & Mary cut the Dragons' lead to six with four seconds left when Matt Rum sank a pair of free throws. Drexel Head Coach Bruiser Flint called timeout and set up a play.
The Dragons, putting the ball in play from under their own basket, had Givens take the ball out. He hit Massenat at half court, who then took a few dribble and nailed a contested three-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, putting the Dragons ahead, 30-21. Drexel shot 52 percent in the half and was perfect in five attempts from the line. Lee scored 10 in the half, while McCoy added seven points.
Drexel returns to Philadelphia for a two-game homestand. The Dragons face Georgia State on Wednesday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 7 p.m. Drexel will then host Delaware on Saturday afternoon.
