ARLINGTON, Va. – Coming off its second Colonial Athletic Association championship game appearance in four years, the Drexel women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the league this season, it was revealed at the annual media day on Tuesday. Senior Hollie Mershon, a Second Team All-CAA performer last season, has been named to the Preseason First Team All-CAA.
Drexel went 19-14 last season, including a 12-6 mark in conference play. The Dragons earned the league's No. 3 seed and wound up advancing to the championship game of the CAA Tournament. With its subsequent selection to the WNIT, Drexel made its school-record fourth-straight postseason tournament. There, they visited Fairfield in the first round and won their first-ever postseason game, defeating the host Stags, 57-41.
Drexel is picked to finish fourth in the league, behind defending champion Delaware, James Madison and Hofstra. The Dragons open league play on January 6 when they host Towson.
Hollie Mershon returns for her senior season as one of the league's selections to earn First Team All-CAA recognition. Mershon finished second on the team and ninth in the CAA last season scoring 14.5 points per game. She knocked down 56 treys while also pacing the Dragons with 108 assists. Mershon comes into the season 24th on the school leaderboard with 860 career points, holding an opportunity to become the 20th player in Drexel women's basketball history to reach 1,000 total points.
Mershon is one of four seniors returning for Drexel this season. Along with Mershon, Taylor Wootton was a mainstay in the Drexel lineup last year, anchoring a defense which finished atop the CAA and in the nation's top five scoring defenses, allowing just 54.3 points per game. Wootton scored 7.2 points per game for the Dragons last year. Also returning are Renee Johnson-Allen, who had 1.2 rebounds a game and 23 total assists as a reserve, and Nicki Jones who led the team with 20 blocked shots.
Drexel kicks off its season on November 9 when the Dragons visit Providence. Their first home contest will be November 14 when they host local rival Saint Joseph's.
