Philadelphia - On Wednesday night, Drexel unveiled the Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Athletics Hall of Fame. It is the first permanent home for the Hall of Fame, which celebrates the 117-year history of Drexel Athletics. The Burkholders, shown in the photo above with Drexel President John A. Fry and Chairman of the Board Richard A. Greenawalt, reside in Wilmington, N.C.
The Hall of Fame is located in the Recreation Center Gallery between the Recreation Center and the Daskalakis Athletic Center. It is an interactive Hall of Fame, with four touch screens. Here, you can view all of the information available on the Hall of Fame members, including photos, biographies, photos from the Lexerd and Triangle articles provided by Drexel Archives. You can also use the screens to view a history of Drexel Athletics, which includes information on Drexel greats, retired numbers, memorable moments and all-time rosters. The Hall of Fame was installed by Forty Nine Degrees of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Hall of Fame would not be possible without the support of Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder. The Burkholder's have built a legacy of community and cultural service since they were both Philadelphia college students. Janet attended the Thomas Jefferson Hospital Nursing School, and Barry graduated from Drexel in 1962. Mr. Burkholder has served as a Drexel trustee since 1998 and his service has coincided with the transformation of Drexel into a nationally renowned urban research university. He received the University's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988, was named to the Drexel 100, which recognizes the school's most dedicated supporters in 1998 and received the A.J. Drexel Paul award, Drexel's highest honor for alumni service in 2007. Earlier this year, Mr. Burkholder was honored with the Golden Dragon Society Award for service by alumni who graduated 50 years ago or more.
In addition to Mr. and Mrs. Burkholder's gift, the Drexel Athletic Hall of Fame received additional gifts that helped make the Hall of Fame a reality. Those people include Clarence Andrews, Dennis Fink, Kathleen Gannon Janavel, Igor Lissy, Janice Marquart Shapiro, Bohdan Siryj, Louisa Willcox Sweeney and Frederic Woerth. Their contributions are greatly appreciated by the Athletics Deparment and the University.
The Hall of Fame is open to the public during regular building hours.
