
Dragons Defeat Towson for 11th Straight Win

Towson, Md. – Drexel held off a pesky Towson team and defeated the Tigers, 65-57, for its 11th straight win. Frantz Massenat had 18 of his 25 points in the second half as Drexel moved to 11-2 in the CAA and 19-5 overall. The Dragons are now in a three-way tie for first place in the CAA with George Mason and VCU.
The Tigers (1-24, 1-12) trailed by seven, seven minutes into the second half, but scored six straight to make it a one-point game. Marcus Damas sank a long three-pointer and was fouled by Drexel's Damion Lee. Damas made the free throw to make the score 38-37. The Dragons answered when Massenat converted a three-point play, pushing the Drexel lead to 41-37. After a Tiger basket, Chris Fouch drained a three-pointer putting the Dragon ahead by five. Towson cut the lead to three with just over six minutes to play, but Drexel answered with eight straight points. Samme Givens scored five of those points and Massenat sank a three-pointer as the Dragons won for the 17th time in the last 18 games. Their 11-game winning streak is the longest at the school since the 1995-96 team won 15 in a row.
Massenat made all eight of his free throws in the final 1:38 to counter three three-pointers by Damas in the final two minutes. For the game, Massenat was a perfect 15-for-15 from the line, breaking the school single-game record for most attempts without a miss from the line. The previous record was held by Brian Holden, who made all 14 in a game against Vermont in 1993.
Drexel controlled the game early, leading 22-12 with eight minutes to play in the first half, but struggled to score down the stretch. The Tigers chipped away and cut it to two points when Damas nailed a three-pointer with 37 seconds to play in the half. Drexel's Lee missed a shot with five seconds left, but Dartaye Ruffin picked up the rebound and scored on the put back to make it a 29-25 Drexel lead at intermission. Drexel shot 39 percent in the first half and committed six turnovers, which led to six Towson points. The Tigers, who entered the game last in the CAA in free throw percentage, made 77 percent (10-for-13) from the line in the opening stanza.
Massenat also had six assists and just one turnover in the game. He made two of his four three-point attempts. Derrick Thomas added 12 points. Daryl McCoy led the team with nine rebounds. The Tigers were led by Damas, who scored 26 points and had six treys. Robert Nwankwo added 12 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. The Tigers outrebounded Drexel, 34-30, and became the first team in 18 games to outrebound Drexel.
