Philadelphia – After a brief delay, action picked up at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center where Drexel hosted Rider for a chance to avenge a one-point loss earlier this season. In a dual that saw one tie and five lead changes, the Rider Broncs came out on top in an 18-15 victory. Despite splitting matches 5-5, a major decision at 165 pounds and a pin at 133 pounds proved to be the deciding factor in the Dragons' loss. Frank Cimato, 141, Austin Sommer, 157, Alex Rinaldi, 174, Brandon Palik, 197 and Kyle Frey, heavy weight all picked up wins.
Cimato started things off early for Drexel as he recorded three take downs and a reversal while only allowing Rider's Jeremy Minich three escapes. After riding time, the junior was able to pull the 9-3 decision for an early Drexel lead, 3-0. Cimato moves to 17-10 overall and 5-1 in the CAA. The Bronc's tied the dual up at 149, but Sommer used a take down and three near fall points in the first period to outlast Ramon Santiago for a 5-4 decision to take back the lead at 6-3 in favor of the Dragons. Sommer is 15-13 overall and 5-2 in CAA action.
Rider answered again this time with a major decision at 165 pounds as the Bronc's James Brundage held Drexel freshman Brendan Sebera to three escapes and a reversal. At 174 pounds, Rinaldi stepped up and pulled a 5-3 decision using riding time along with an escape and a penalty point in the third period over Rider's Brandon Lintner. The Drexel senior moves to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in the CAA. Again, Rider fought back this time at 184 pounds with a 9-4 decision.
Not to be outdone, the Dragons took the next two matches to pull ahead by the largest lead of the night, 15-10. At 197 pounds, Palik improved his record to 23-11 overall to lead Drexel in wins and 5-1 in the CAA, with a 3-2 decision. Using two escapes and a penalty point, Palik outlasted Rider's Donald McNeil for the second time this season. With a 12-10 advantage, Frey stepped on to the mat to face Evan Craig once again this year. The senior has now outscored Craig 13-1 on the season this time using a 7-0 blanking of the Bronc's heavy weight.
With two matches to go, Drexel's Franco Ferraina used a last second escape at 125 pounds to avoid giving up bonus points to Rider which kept the Dragons ahead by three points after a one-point team deduction penalty against the Broncs. However, Rider's Jimmy Morris used a third period pin at 133 pounds to give the Broncs the final 18-15 victory.
Drexel will pick up action this Saturday, February 11 as they host CAA rival George Mason in a 12:00 p.m. dual at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center. Make sure to arrive early as Drexel wrestling honors three seniors for their time and dedication to the program as they wrestle in their last home match as Dragons. Michael Gomez, 125 pounds, Alex Rinaldi, 165 & 174 pounds and Kyle Frey, heavy weight all step on the mat for the last time at home.
