FAIRFAX, Va. - The Drexel women's tennis team concluded its regular season with an exciting 4-3 victory at George Mason on Friday afternoon. The Dragons won two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point, then got singles victories from Zeynep Mafa, Alex Bell and Nicole Pivonka to clinch the match.
Doubles play started the day, with Drexel getting wins from its top team and No. 3 pairing. Sonja Stosic and Mafa cruised to an 8-2 victory, and Emma Brook teamed with Nicole Pivonka for a convincing 8-3 win to wrap up the point.
In singles play, Mafa battled to a 7-5 win in the first set, then rolled to a 6-3 win in the second set to get the victory at No. 2 singles. Although George Mason got a win at No. 1 singles and got two hard-fought wins at positions three and four, Drexel saw the bottom of its ladder play focused, dominant tennis to make sure that the Dragons got the win. Alex Bell won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, and Nicole Pivonka earned a spotless 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Drexel will next be in action at the CAA Championships, to be held in Richmond next week. More information on pairings and schedules will be available as the week progresses.
