Women's Tennis Battles at SJU Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's tennis team returned to the courts on Friday at the Saint Joseph's Invitational, and put together a solid weekend as they continued their strong start to the fall campaign.
In Singles Flight Three, Nicole Pivonka advanced to the semifinals with victories over Nicole Esposito of Saint Joseph's and Lydia Colvin of Bucknell on Saturday. Pivonka knocked off Esposito in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, then rallied past Colvin 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
Also in Flight Three, Alex Bell moved on to the semifinal in the bottom half of that bracket. Bell downed Catherine Senopolous of Lafayette, 6-1, 6-3 to move onto the quarterfinals, where she handled Yalda Hajavi of Villanova, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.
Both Pivonka and Bell fell to teams from Pittsburgh in their semifinal matches.
In her singles flight, Emma Brook advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Karma Parbhu of Pittsburgh. She was then taken down in the quarters in a tense, 6-7 (13-11), 6-3, 11-9 match with Aurora Davis of Saint Joseph's. Also advancing to the quarterfinals before falling was freshman Amanda Tilles, who defeated Blair Brown of Pitt 6-3, 7-5, and Aysenil Orhon, who defeated St. Francis' Laura Husband 6-0, 6-3.
Erin Bowsher and Nicole Pivonka advanced to the semifinals of Doubles Flight Two, defeating a pair from the host Saint Joseph's Hawks in the first round, 8-2, before knocking off a duo from Delaware in the quarterfinals, 8-3
Zeynep Mafa and Marcela Rosales defeated Temple in the first round, 8-3, but fell to Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals.
After falling in their first round matchup, Emma Brook and Alex Bell defeated teams from Villanova, Saint Joseph's and another Villanova squad to win the Flight One Doubles Consolation bracket. Mafa and Rosales also advanced to the finals of their consolation draw ebfore falling to Pittsburgh.
