Drexel Crew Takes Home Three Cups at Rumson Boat Race

Rumson, N.J. – Drexel University's varsity eight boats opened the fall season with speed placing first in three of four events at the third annual Rumson Boat Race held on the Navesink River. Both men's and women's top eights won the Governor's Cup, while the women's second varsity eight earned the Mayor's Cup on Saturday morning.
The women's varsity eight won its second consecutive Governor's Cup by open water over Villanova. The Dragons held the lead for the majority of the race recording a top time of 9:21.52 followed by the Wildcats at 9:48.9. The victorious Maria Papadakis boat included coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Olivia Babiec, Colleen Delaney, Julia Jackson, Samantha Cowan, Amanda O'Malley, Elizabeth Daugherty, Mollie Cusack and bow Elizabeth Campanella.
The women's second varsity eight also placed first crossing the finish line ahead of the Wildcats and Army for the Mayor's Cup. The Marlene Buckley boat stopped the clock at 9:05.82 followed by Villanova at 9:24.21. The shell consisted of Sarah Messenger, Amanda Kleuser, Bridget Pfeifer, Jackie Bender, Emily Gartland, Amanda Dargay, Alyssa Leahy, Jayme Batcher and bow Elise Levito. Army came in third with a time of 9:28.56.
The men's varsity eight returns to University City with the Governor's Cup for the second straight year. The men outlasted Rutgers by three-fourths of a length for first place clocking in at 8:02.48. The winning Vince Vidas boat featured coxswain Marc Smith, stroke Sebastian Ryan, Vanja Busic, Michael Faust, Ryan Mallgrave, John Pieper, Adam Cordi, Kurt Linton and bow Hartman Byers.
The men's second varsity eight narrowly missed first place to Army by just two seats. Army crossed the finish line at 7:51.06. Victoria Kenion coxed the Annette Pennoni boat with stroke Grigorios Papadourakis, Brian McCabe, Timothy Drake, Ryan McSpedon, Dean Hill, Jake Murphy, Jacob Smith and Andrew Weinstein to a second-place finish with at time of 7:52.7.
Drexel Crew returns to action on Saturday, October 13 at the Navy Day Regatta on the home waters of the Schuylkill River.
