Wrestling Concludes Competition at Eastern Michigan Open

Ypsilanti, Mich. – The Drexel wrestling team concluded play at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday. After falling in four duals, the Dragons move to 1-6 thus far on the season.
In its first match of the day, Drexel fell to Ohio 19-15 in a close matchup. The Dragons led 12-0 after victories from Kevin Devoy Jr., David Pearce, and Matthew Cimato, but then Ohio took a 15-12 lead after winning the next five matches. Senior Brandon Palik tied the dual up at 15-15 with a 7-0 victory over Ohio's Phil Wellington, but the Bobcats were able to come up victorious with a 14-5 major decision at 285 that earned them the overall win.
Next up, the Dragons faced Central Michigan, who defeated Drexel, 29-10. The Chippewas jumped out to a 26-0 lead after seven matches. Senior Kevin Matyas got the Dragons on the board with a win-by-fall at 8:50 in the 184 match, and Palik followed with a major decision over Central Michigan's Jackson Lewis at 197. The deficit was too much to overcome as the Chippewas earned another win at 285 and took the overall victory.
Despite suffering losses in the first two matches, the Dragons came out fighting against Eastern Michigan. Devoy Jr fell just short in a 10-9 decision at 125, Pearce battled it out with EMU's Vincent Pizzuto but loss in an 8-6 decision, and Cimato suffered a close 6-4 loss at 141 as the Eagles took a 9-0 lead. Eastern Michigan would continue to take the next three matches as well, going up 18-0 on the Dragons. Bryan Sternlieb put the Dragons on the board with an 11-8 decision over EMU's Mike Curby at 174, and Palik would add a 10-3 decision two matches later, but the Dragons were unable to overcome the deficit and fell 27-6.
To finish out the day the Dragons took on the Spartans of Michigan State, who defeated Drexel 25-9. Devoy picked up his second win of the day to put the Dragons up first. Pearce came close to overcoming Garther Yenter at 133, but was ultimately defeated 6-5 to tie things up at 3-3. Cimato and Noel Blanco earned 6-0 and 7-4 decisions respectively at 141 and 149 to put the Dragons back up 9-3, but the Spartans then went on a six-win run to close out the dual with a score of 25-9.
The Dragons will return to action on December 1 as they compete in the second annual Grapple at the Garden. Drexel will face EIWA conference member Princeton as well as George Mason in its second appearance at the tournament at Madison Square Garden.
