Piscataway, N.J. -. Chris Fouch scored a team-high 22 points and Bruiser Flint became the winningest coach in Drexel history as the Dragons (2-1) defeated Elon, 71-64, in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Rutgers University.
Flint, now in his 13th season, picked up his 214th win at the school and the 300th of his career, passing Drexel legend Sam Cozen for the top spot in the record book. Flint's squad led from wire to wire after opening up a 6-0 lead and holding the Phoenix (2-2) scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. Both teams struggled to get into a flow offensively in the first half. There were 24 fouls called in the opening 20 minutes. Drexel shot 20 free throws in the half, converting 14 of them on the way to a 33-23 lead at intermission. Fouch and Damion Lee each had nine in the first half. Mohamed Bah and Tavon Allen each contributed five points off the bench.
The Dragons extended the lead to as many as 16 points in the second half after Fouch drained a three-pointer with 14:06 to play. Elon was able to chip away at the lead, due mainly to its success from the line, and made it a close contest down the stretch. The Phoenix was 18-for-19 from the charity stripe in the second half. Tanner Samson drained a three-pointer with 1:02 to play to make it a 66-62 Drexel lead. The Dragons answered with a pair of free throws by Damion Lee to increase the lead to six. Once again, Elon answered with two free throws, but Drexel was able to hold defensively and put the game away with two Fouch freebies with just eight seconds to play.
Fouch was 6-for-15 from the floor, shot 8-for-9 from the line and made a pair of three pointers. It was his second straight game with at least 22 points. Lee added 16 points and was 2-for-3 from deep. Allen had another good game off the bench for the Dragons. The sophomore scored 15 points, just one shy of his career high. Kazembe Abif grabbed nine rebounds to lead the team. Drexel outrebounded the Phoenix, 39-24.
Lucas Troutman led Elon with 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting. Ryley Beaumont added 10 points. The Phoenix was held in check from long range making just two of its 16 three-point opportunities.
Drexel will play again at the Rutgers Athletic Center on Tuesday evening. The Dragons and Rutgers will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.. The winner of Tuesday's game will advance to the NIT Season Tip-Off Semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 27.
