Women's Basketball Sees Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Hofstra, 53-43

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – A three-game winning streak came to an end for the Drexel women's basketball team on Thursday afternoon as they fell at Hofstra, 53-43. The Dragons shot just 23.4 percent from the floor and 11.1 percent from long range and, unlike last month when these teams met in Philadelphia, they could not finish off their comeback effort.
Hollie Mershon scored 12 points to lead the Dragons, adding seven rebounds. Taylor Wootton also had 10 to go along with six boards. Renee Johnson-Allen chipped in six points, three assists and seven rebounds.
Drexel kept itself in the game with typically strong defense, forcing 20 Hofstra turnovers on the day. The Pride shot 41.7 percent from the floor on the day, but Drexel could not take advantage of the Pride miscues, getting just 11 points off those 20 turnovers.
As was the case when these two teams met earlier in the year, Drexel got off to a slow start in the first half. The Dragons trailed by as many as 13 points, going without a field goal for the last 10:31 of the half and 11:54 overall stretching into the second. Two free throws from Hollie Mershon – her only points of the period – were the only points Drexel could muster as Hofstra extended a 14-12 lead with 10:31 to play into a 25-14 halftime lead.
Despite the offensive woes that saw Drexel shoot just 17.9 percent from the floor, the Dragons played solid defense to keep themselves within range. Hofstra was 10-for-24 from the floor, turning the ball over nine times. Drexel limited the Pride's second-chance opportunities, ceding just two second-chance points in the first half.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Dragons got things going briefly. Renee Johnson-Allen drove to the hoop for lay-ups sandwiched around a Mershon bucket that cut the Hofstra lead to seven less than five minutes into the period. However, Hofstra responded with a 10-0 run of its own to build its largest lead of the day.
Drexel will now have five days before its next game, the start of a three-game homestand against UNC Wilmington on February 19. The Dragons play at the Daskalakis Athletic Center three times in six days beginning with that game, including games against George Mason on the 21st and William and Mary on the 24th.
