Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight, 57-46 Over George Mason
2/21/2013 8:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Hollie Mershon scored 18 of her 26 points in the first half as the Drexel women's basketball team grabbed control of Thursday's game against George Mason early and never looked back, defeating the Patriots 57-46. Drexel (18-7, 11-3) won its second straight game and first in its series with Mason since January 21, 2010.
Mershon put together her 11th 20-point effort of the season and first since February 3 against Georgia State. She finished with 11 field goals, one shy of her career high, on 21 attempts. She moved into the Drexel top 10 in career field goals made, now with 472.
George Mason (8-17, 3-11) was led by Janaa Pickard, who had 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 evening from the floor. Amber Easter added 11 points and five assists.
The Patriots scored the game's first points on a 12-foot jumper by Pickard. Mershon had an answer for that as well as Joyous Tharrington's bucket that had given Mason a 4-2 lead. Taylor Wootton then knocked down a jumper with 16:31 remaining that gave Drexel a 6-4 edge. The Dragons would not trail the rest of the game.
Wootton had six points in the first half and eight on the evening, as she and Mershon scored the Dragons' first 17 points. Fiona Flanagan joined the party with 8:41 remaining in the first half when she buried a three from the right wing, pushing the Dragons' lead at the time to 20-12. Mershon then scored the next five as Drexel extended its lead to double figures, 25-14.
After a Pickard three-pointer sliced Drexel's lead to eight, Renee Johnson-Allen slashed to the hoop and finished an off-balanced lay-up while being fouled. The senior hit the free throw, one of six Drexel converted on the evening as the Dragons were perfect from the free throw line for the second consecutive game. Drexel has now made its last 18 free throws.
Drexel, which led by as many as 18 in the second half, got 51 points from its starting five. Flanagan finished with six as did Meghan Creighton, who added four assists. Johnson-Allen had five points. Tory Thierolf chipped in four points and an assist off the bench, while Abby Redick sank two free throws, adding a team-best six rebounds and three helpers.
The Dragons have now won the first two games of their three-game homestand. They will finish that on Sunday when they host William & Mary. Drexel is looking for its third-consecutive season sweep of the Tribe after winning in Williamsburg on January 20, 58-46.
