Men's Crew Sweeps Events in Spring Opener

Philadelphia – The Drexel men's and women's crew program won five first-place finishes in the opening competition of the 2013 spring season opens on Saturday. Drexel also recorded a pair of second and third place victories. The Dragons faced Delaware, La Salle and Saint Joseph's on the home waters of the Schuylkill River.
The men's team raced two boats in the men's freshmen four event. The freshman four 'B' boat took first-place with a time of 6:42.4. The Tobey & Kim Oxholm boat featured coxswain Zachary Morris, stroke Daniel Palombo, Dave Hanrahan, Michael DiLucca and bow Daniel Pyle. The freshman four 'A' boat finished second stopping the clock at 6:45.2. Ariana Kaufmann coxed the LeBow College of Business boat from lane three with the help of stroke Lawrence Lindawan, Daniel Dollin, Mikulas Sum and bow Nicholas Capaldi. La Salle took third-place with a time of 7:13.6.
Drexel entered two shells in the second varsity eight race. The second varsity eight 'A' shell crossed the finish line at 6:07.3 for the top-place finish.The Joseph Greipp boat consisted of coxswain Diana Fox, stroke Sebastian Ryan, Cameron Staines, Michael Faust, John Pieper, Kurt Linton, Ryan Mallgrave, James Byrne and box Casimir Czworkowski. The Dragons' second varsity eight 'B' boat followed at 6:18.5 taking second-place Victoria Kenion coxed the Vince Vidas boat from lane one with stroke Adam Cordi, Christian Ladd, Timothy Drake, Jake Murphy, Ryan McSpedon, Mahmoud Shurbaji, Matt Gehret and bow Andrew Weinstein. The Explorers clocked in at 6:29.5 for third.
The men's varsity eight concluded the day with a first-place finish posting at time of 6:03.4. The Joseph Greipp boat consisted of coxswain Marc Smith, stroke Aleksandar Radovic, Paul Wisniowski, Marko Durica, Lorenzo Albala, Ian Luetzow, Vanja Busic, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Brian McCabe. La Salle registered a time of 6:10.4 for second overall.
On the women's side, the second varsity eight boat placed first with a time of 7:01.4. The winning Marlene Buckley boat featured coxswain Sarah Messenger, stroke Amanda Kleuser, Elizabeth Daugherty, Jayme Batcher, Alyssa Leahy, Amanda Dargay, Elise Panacek, Kathie Cheng and bow Elise Levito. Saint Joseph's came in second with a time of 7:10.4 followed by Delaware and La Salle.
The women's freshmen eight clocked in the top-time with a 7:15.2 for first-place. Rachel Bowen coxed the John Daskalakis boat along with stroke Caitlin Bubel, Jordan Marinchak, Taylor Brady, Elisabeth Wagner, Rebecca McCool, Patience Dodgson, Rose Ehrlich and bow Kate Wilchek. The Hawks took second-place with a 7:28.9. La Salle and Delaware earned third and fourth place respectively.
The women's varsity four finished third with a time of 8:08. Saint Joseph's stopped the clock at 7:50.0 for first-place and Delaware came in second with a time of 8:04.4. The Sandra Lee Sheller boat will race from lane two lead by coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Barbara McKenna, Olivia Carignan, Ashley Lidwell and bow Julie McGlynn. La Salle recorded a time of 8:21.6 for fourth-place.
The women's varsity eight closed out the day from lane two with a second-place finish. Saint Joseph's crossed the finish line at 6:55.3 followed by the Dragons at 7:00.0. Kerry Walsh guided the Maria Papadakis boat along with stroke Olivia Babiec, Alexa Antonioli, Julia Jackson, Mollie Cusack, Amanda O'Malley, Bridget Pfeifer, Sierra Baca and bow Colleen Delaney. La Salle stopped the clock at 7:05.5 for third-place and Delaware came in fourth with a time of 7:19.5.
The Dragons will return to action at the Murphy Cup Regatta on March 30.
