Saavedra Clinches Victory Over Delaware at CAA Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - On Friday, April 19 the men's and women's tennis teams competed in the CAA Championships. The women ended quarterfinal competition first as they fell to Delaware, 4-0. The men then went on to defeat Delaware, 4-3, with a crucial win from freshman, Xabier Saavedra, moving the team to the semifinals in the tournament.
The exciting men's match versus the Blue Hens included four three-set contests. The Dragons picked up the doubles point with victories at the top two positions. At No. 1, Drexel's Skyler Davis and Dan Koehler defeated Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton, 8-3, while the No. 2 team of Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Saavedra beat Evan Andrews and Nolan Gelman, 8-4.
In singles play, Drexel got it's first win in the No. 3 position, as Davis rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Andrews. Although the Blue Hen's took the lead at No. 1, Alex Fioravante fought back for a 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) win over Jason Derene at No. 6, setting the match, 3-3.Fiorvante overcame a 6-2 deficit in the second-set tiebreaker.The match was decided in the final three-setter at No. 5. Saavedra battled past Mike Furr, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-3 to clinch the victory.
In Saturday's semifinals at 2 p.m., #1 UNCW will face #4 Drexel.
