
Women's Eights Sweep Events at the Rumson Boat Race

RUMSON, N.J. - Drexel Crew won three out of four events in the season opener at the 2013 Rumson Boat Race on Saturday morning. The women's varsity eight earned the Mayor's Cup for the third consecutive year, while the men's and women's second varsity eight shells captured first-place finishes.
The women's varsity eight stopped the clock first at 10:19 ahead of Army and Villanova. The winning Maria Papadakis boat included coxswain Kerry Walsh, Kayla Wroblesky, Colleen Delaney, Marina Forster, Elizabeth Daugherty, Olivia Babiec, Sierra Baca, Stephanie Thomas and bow Elise Levito.
The women's second varsity eight crossed the finish line at 11:01 for first place overall. Sarah Messenger coxed the Marlene Buckley boat featuring stroke Amanda Kleuser, Bridget Pfeifer, Taylor Brady, Samantha Cowan, Emily Gartland, Alyssa Leahy, Elisabeth Wagner and bow Julie McGlynn past the Black Knights and the Wildcats.
The men's second varsity eight also placed first with a time of 9:27 before Rutgers and Villanova. The Annette Pennoni consisted of Christopher Henderson, stroke Ryan McSpedon, Cameron Staines, James Byrne, Mahmoud Shurbaji, Brian Kissam, Ryan Mallgrave, Matt Gehret and bow Andrew Weinstein.
The men's varsity eight narrowly missed first-place to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights recorded a time of 8:53 for the Governor's Cup followed by the Dragons at 8:59. Coxswain Victoria Kenion guided the Joseph Greipp boat along with stroke Dean Hill, Casimir Czworkowski, Sebastian Ryan, Nicholas Capaldi, Marko Durica, John Pieper, Christian Ladd, and bow Brian McCabe ahead of Villanova.
Drexel Crew will race Bucknell and Lehigh on Saturday, October 5 on the Susquehanna River in Lewisburg, Pa.
