Philadelphia, Pa. – Chris Fouch scored 28 points, but Towson came into the Daskalakis Athletic Center and defeated an undermanned Drexel team, 80-68. The Dragons played without four of their regulars due to injury.
Drexel (9-7, 1-2 CAA) led by five in the early going, but the Tigers (11-6, 2-0 CAA) went on a 15-2 run midway through the first half and never trailed again. The Dragons cut the deficit down to one after a three-pointer by Frantz Massenat with 7:17 to play in the half, but the Tigers answered with seven straight points and then had an 8-0 run right before intermission to take a 38-29 lead at halftime. Towson shot a staggering 61 percent in the half and made five three pointers. The Dragons started the second half with a Massenat bucket to cut the lead to seven points, but could not get any closer the rest of the way.
Fouch kept the Dragons in the game with 17 of his game-high 28 points coming in the second half. The graduate student now has 1,489 career points and moved past Phil Goss and Brian Holden into ninth place on the school's career scoring list. He knocked down three three-pointers and came up with seven rebounds as well. Massenat, who was limited due to foul trouble, still managed to score 21 points. He also moved up Drexel's leaderboard into 14th place on the career scoring list. The two were the only Dragons to score in double digits. Freshman Rodney Williams had a career-high 14 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end. Drexel had 24 offensive boards but managed only 13 second-chance points.
Towson's Jerrelle Benimon showed why he was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year. The Georgetown transfer scored 27 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out seven assists. He was 10-for-14 from the floor and made both of his three-point attempts. Marcus Damas tied his career-high with 26 points and was 4-for-5 from deep. The Tigers finished the game shooting 55 percent from the floor and held Drexel to 32 percent.
The Dragons are back on the road this weekend when they play at UNC Wilmington in a CAA contest on Saturday afternoon.
