Boulder, Colo. – Drexel opened the 2014-15 season with a 65-48 loss at Colorado on Friday night. The Dragons held their own with the Buffaloes until a 7-0 run late in the game put it out of reach.
Tavon Allen led the Dragons with 16 points off the bench. Damion Lee, making his return to the court after suffering a season-ending injury in the Dragons' loss to Arizona at Madison Square Garden last November, finished with 12 points. Rodney Williams chipped in eight, adding a team-best seven rebounds.
Colorado opened the game with a 12-3 run as Drexel struggled to score in the early going. The Dragons made just one of their first 11 shots in the early going before finally getting on track. Drexel had a number of new faces on the court early as Freddie Wilson and Rashann London each made their first starts as Dragons. After overcoming the slow start, Drexel was able to stay with the Buffaloes, several times pulling within a possession of the home team. The Dragons trailed by just four at intermission. Tavon Allen had 11 points off the bench in the first half to lead the Dragons.
Early in the second half, Colorado echoed its start from the first half. After the teams traded buckets to start the period, the Buffaloes went on a 9-2 run to stretch their advantage to 11. Again, though, the Dragons answered with scores from Lee and Williams to get the deficit down to seven with 13:57 to play.
Colorado was able to stem the tide before Drexel could get any closer, though the Dragons hung tough. The Buffaloes led by 11 after Allen buried a three-pointer with 8:37 remaining, but that would be Drexel's last points for 6:17 as Colorado went on a 7-0 run to essentially put the game away.
The Dragons return home in the morning and will face Saint Joseph's on Monday night. The home opener against the Hawks will tip-off at 7 p.m. in the newly-renovated Daskalakis Athletic Center. Limited tickets remain for that game.
