Dragons Fall to Miami in Opening Round of Charleston Classic

Charleston, S.C. – The Drexel men's basketball team opened play in the Gildan Charleston Classic on Thursday with a 66-46 loss at the hands of the Miami Hurricanes. Miami made 11 three-pointers, including 7-of-12 in the second half as they remained unbeaten at 3-0.

The game was close in the early going of the second half. Drexel (0-3) trailed by just four at 28-24, but Miami scored 10 straight points and went on a 16-3 run midway through the second half to take control of the game. The Hurricanes' Angel Rodriguez keyed the run with a pair of three-pointers. Four different 'Canes had at least a pair of treys in the contest.

Tavon Allen led the Dragons with 13 points, but the junior shot just 4-for-17 in the game. Freddie Wilson added 12 points off the bench. Damion Lee, Drexel's leading scorer, had just six shot attempts as Miami played box-and-one on the junior, denying him the ball for most of the game after he scored eight points early.
Rodriguez and Manu Lecomte each scored 15 points in the game. The pair combined to go 6-for-11 form long range. Tonye Jekiri grabbed 13 rebounds and neutralized Drexel's big men. The Dragons post palyers scored just eight points in the game.

The Dragons held an early 8-6 lead after a pair of Lee three-pointers. His second trey of the game gave him his 1,000^th career point. However, as the half progressed Drexel went more than seven minutes without a field goal. That defensive effort by the Hurricanes propelled them to an eight-point lead at intermission.

With the win the Hurricanes advanced to the winner's bracket of the tournament to face Akron. Drexel will face the University of Southern California on Friday at noon at the TD Arena in Charleston. Drexel will be off on Saturday and then play their final game of the tournament on Sunday. The time and opponent will be determined on Friday.
