12/28/2014 3:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia, Pa. — Iona had four players score in double figures as the Gaels defeated Drexel, 81-62, at the Daskalaskis Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons, now 2-9 on the season, have lost five straight heading into conference play. Iona improved to 8-4 on the year.
Drexel held the Gaels below their season average of 85.5 points per game, but shot just 34 percent from the field and never led in the game. The Dragons fell behind by 15 early in the second half, but chipped away with a 9-1 run. Damion Lee's three-pointer started the run and when he made a pair of free throws with 12:55 to play, the Dragons trailed by just seven. However, the Gaels answered as they did most of the day. Iona scored 10 straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers by A.J English and David Laury to put the game out of reach.
Lee and Tavon Allen each scored 18 to lead the Dragons' attack. Allen drained four three pointers, while Lee had three. Sammy Mojica came off the bench to score 10 points and was 2-for-3 from deep.
English, who came into the game leading the nation in scoring at 23.4 points per game, led the Gaels with 19. Laury had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Schadrac Casimir scored 16 and led the team with five assists. Kelvin Amayo was also in double figures with 14 points. The Gaels sank 10 of their 21 long-range attempts (.476).
The Dragons begin conference play on Jan. 3 at the DAC. Elon will be making its first visit as a member of the CAA. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
