Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel wrestling squad defeated Duke, 24-14, for its first home victory of the season. The Dragons improve to 5-13 overall, while the Blue Devils move to 5-10 on the season.
Tanner Shoap received a forfeit at 125 to start off the night. Kevin Devoy Jr followed with a 6-0 decision at 133 after picking up a three-point near fall and a two-point take down. David Pearce was awarded a victory after Duke's Xaviel Ramos was disqualified for flagrant misconduct in the 141 match. This brought the Dragons lead up to 15-0 and removed one team point from Duke's score.
The Blue Devils got themselves on the board with a 2-0 decision at 149 over Matthew Cimato. Austin Sommer then was neck and neck with Duke's Immanuel Kerr-Brown throughout the 157 match. The two were tied at 7-7 with 20 seconds to go, but Sommer picked up a crucial two-point takedown with five seconds remaining to secure the victory and increase the Dragons' lead to 18-2.
Jason Fugiel followed with a tough fight at 165, but ultimately dropped a 3-1 decision to Duke's Marcus Cain. Kevin Matyas earned the Dragons six more points at 174 with a win-by-fall at 4:45, increasing Drexel's lead to 24-5. Bryan Sternlieb went for the Dragons at 184, but lost a 7-1 decision to Duke's Jacob Kasper.
Brandon Palik had a strong outing at 197, tying Conner Hartmann in regulation 3-3. After six overtime periods, however, Palik was defeated 7-4. Duke picked up a 6-2 decision at 285 but it was not enough to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created.
Drexel Wrestling returns to action next Friday, February 7, as they host Rider at 7:00 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
