Philadelphia, Pa. – Tavon Allen, Chris Fouch and Frantz Massenat combined for 48 of Drexel's 61 points as the Dragons defeated UNCW at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 61-50. The Dragons (12-10, 4-5 CAA) held the Seahawks to just 36 percent shooting. It was the fewest points the Drexel defense has given up this season.
UNCW (6-17, 0-8 CAA) trailed by five midway through the first half, but went on a 9-0 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Dragons broke the run when Kazembe Abif sank the second of his two free throw attempts. Drexel was held without a field goal for more than eight minutes in the first half, but managed to end the half on a 12-2 run of its own to take a 29-24 lead. Fouch had eight of the Dragons 12 points in that run and finished the half with 13.
Both teams struggled to score in the early going in the second half. UNCW got the lead to within one on two occasions in the second half before the Dragons' Allen knocked down a jumper and then went the length of the court for a lay-up to make it 46-41 with 6:50 remaining. Massenat nailed a three-pointer less than a minute later to give the Dragons and eight-point lead. The Seahawks weren't able to get closer than six points the rest of the way.
Allen led the way with 17 points off the bench. The sophomore was 8-for-15 from the floor and had five rebounds. Fouch finished the game with 16 points and was 3-for-5 from long range. Massenat had a quiet but productive game for the Dragons. He was 4-for-8 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the line. Massenat's final numbers read 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. With his second free throw of the game, the senior reached 1,500 points in his career.
Drexel shot 44 percent from the floor in the game and was outstanding from the line. The Dragons were 16-for-17 from the charity stripe, including a perfect 8-for-8 in the second half. Once again, the Dragons took care of the basketball, committing just four turnovers, one shy of the school record that they tied earlier this season. Drexel came into the game ranked second in the nation in fewest turnovers committed per game.
Addison Spruill led all players with 22 points. He was the only Seahawk in double figures. Cedrick Williams, who entered the game leading the Seahawks with 14.4 points, was held to just 1-for-12 shooting and six points. The Seahawks' 50 points were the fewest they have scored in a league game this year and their lowest total since opening night, when Iowa held them to 39 points.
The Dragons are off until Saturday, when James Madison makes its annual visit to the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
