PHILADELPHIA - On Sunday, March 9 the Drexel Dragons faced UMBC in a home match at Legacy Courts. The women (8-2) fought their way to a, 4-3, victory, while the men (6-5) fell short this year, 5-1.
After losing to UMBC in a, 7-0, sweep last year, the women stepped up their game and kept the victory at home this time. The match featured singles competition first, and at No. 2 Nicole Pivonka chose a good shot selection and strategic defensive skills to defeat her opponent, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Marcela took her match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, as she played an outstanding game with impressive footwork and agressive rallies. No. 4, Erin Bowsher saw the teams next win, 6-1, 7-6 (5), and executed her ability to give the ball point-winning direction.
With three singles wins and a current 3-3 tie with UMBC, doubles play began. At No. 2, Pivonka and Bowsher broke twice and held serve for the, 8-3, victory. They showed good communication throughout the match. At No. 3, the Freshman duo, Fiorella Coria and Lea Winkler, clinched the doubles point with smart tennis, a stong net game, and high percentage shots. The teammates were down, 5-3, and managed to pull out an, 8-6, win. At No. 1, Zeynep Mafa and Rosales left their match unfinished.
