Women's Basketball Rolls to 82-40 Win Over Towson on Senior Night

PHILADELPHIA – Before the season started, a young Drexel women's basketball team set a goal for itself to finish the regular season in the top four in the Colonial Athletic Association. Coming into play on Wednesday night, the Dragons needed a win to achieve that goal. Drexel wasted no time jumping on top of Towson on Senior Night, rolling to an 82-40 victory that locked up the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
Carrie Alexander had a career high by halftime as Drexel set season highs with 42 points on 19-of-26 shooting (73.1 percent) in the first half. She finished with 14 points, matching senior Tory Thierolf for the team-high. Rachel Pearson added 12 points, going 4-for-4 from long range in the second half. Jackie Schluth added 10 points, matching her career high on 5-of-6 shooting.
Senior Fiona Flanagan added nine points, hitting her first three treys of the night and finishing 3-for-4. She also had five assists and no turnovers. In all, nine different Dragons scored on the evening, with seven of them netting at least eight points. Meghan Creighton added six assists to her eight points, a team high as the Dragons dished out 27 helpers on the evening. Sarah Curran also had eight points to go along with a career-high four assists. Senior Abby Redick finished with two points, three rebounds and two assists.
Drexel finished shooting a season-best 64.7 percent from the floor, hitting 33 of 51 attempts. The Dragons were also 10-for-17 from long range, including a 7-for-12 mark in the second half.
The Dragons did not trail after allowing the Tigers to score the game's first points, putting Towson on top 2-0. Thierolf netted the next four for the Dragons, followed by a three-ball by Flanagan.
By the 11:26 mark of the first half, Drexel was up by double digits after another trey from the senior out of Penn Valley, Pa. Flanagan has now hit 121 of her 299 career three-point attempts, good for a .405 career percentage. She is not only the only Dragon in history to record a career mark above 40 percent, she is also the only one to post a career percentage above .390. The next-highest total is .382, held by former teammate Kamile Nacickaite.
Drexel would maintain a double-digit lead throughout the game, steadily building it until an apex of a 48-point cushion with 4:09 to play. The Dragons got major contributions from their bench in their second 40-point victory of the season. Drexel's bench outscored that of Towson 37-2 on the night. Tanisha McTiller, the league's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 19 for Towson. Reigning CAA Player of the Week LaTorri Hines-Allen added 11, as well as 12 rebounds.
Drexel will return to the court next Friday, March 14, when it heads to the quarterfinals of the 2014 CAA Championships as the No. 4 seed. That game, and the entire tournament, will be held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. for a fourth-consecutive season.
