Late Goal Downs Men's Soccer, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team was done in by a goal in the 88th minute on Wednesday evening at Vidas Field as visiting Loyola converted on a corner to net the game's lone goal in a 1-0 defeat of the Dragons. Lake Heroux converted on a pass to the back post from Laurin Vogel for the winner, although the Dragons outshot the Greyhounds 8-6 for the game and 6-3 in the second half. The loss was the second in a row for the Dragons (2-2) and first of the year at Vidas Field.
The first half came and went without a serious threat from either side. In the second half, both teams stepped up the offensive pressure. Guido Pena got off a rocket in the 63rd minute that sailed just a few feet high. Two minutes later, the Dragons got their first sustained opportunity in the Loyola end. After forcing a corner, Drexel worked the ball in front of the net where both Michele Pataia and Erik Alexandersson had solid looks at the goal. Both managed strong shots, but Loyola goalkeeper Matt Sanchez stopped both for two of his four saves.
Loyola had just two shots in the second half before the game-winning goal, with neither getting on net. However, they were stymied by some strong Dragon defensive play in the period. One play in particular saw Maty Brennan make a sliding stop to deflect away a well-placed cross that would have led to a Loyola shot from point blank range.
Late in the 87th minute, though, the Greyhounds got their chance. On their third corner of the evening, Vogel inserted with a perfectly placed ball to the back post. Heroux leapt above the defense and got to the ball first, heading it just inside the post and beyond the grasp of Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach. The Dragons would make offensive substitutions following the goal to attempt a last-minute comeback, but could not manage a shot as the Greyhounds escaped with the victory.
Drexel will get back in action on Saturday evening when the Dragons visit Saint Joseph's for the team's fourth and final game against a Philadelphia Soccer Six opponent. The second official Soccer Six match of the season, Saturday's game could see Drexel claim at least a share of the Soccer Six crown with a victory. The Dragons have not won that title since 2010.
