William and Mary Erases Early Drexel Lead and Downs Dragons, 73-47

Philadelphia, Pa. — William & Mary shot 61 percent in the second half and went on to a 73-47 win against Drexel at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Tribe led by just five at intermission, but took control of the game in the early minutes of the second frame and improved to 8-5 (2-0 in the CAA) on the season. Drexel fell to 0-2 in league play and 2-11 overall. The Tribe outscored Drexel 39-18 over the game's final 20 minutes.

Marcus Thornton scored a game-high 23 points for the Tribe. He was 7-for-12 from the floor, 5-for-7 from behind the arc and had six assists. Daniel Dixon added 14 points and sank four treys. As a team, the Tribe shot 55 percent overall and 44 percent from three-point territory (11-for-25).

Damion Lee led Drexel with 18 points and seven rebounds. The junior also had three assists and three steals. Freshman Rashann London added 16 points and played the entire 40 minutes. No other Dragon had more than six points.

Drexel came out on fire in the early going. The Dragons made their first five shots, scored the first seven points on the game and led 12-3 in the opening minutes. The Tribe answered with nine straight points to tie it up as Drexel missed its next seven attempts. The game went back and forth the rest of the first half and the fans got to see an offensive duel between Damion Lee and Marcus Thornton, two of the best players in the CAA. Thornton scored 18 points in the half, while Lee had 16. Both players made four three-pointers.

The second half was all William & Mary. Drexel was just one for 12 from deep and shot a paltry 26 percent in the period. The Dragons finished the game shooting 31.6 percent. Drexel took care of the ball in the early going but turned it over six times in the second half. On the other end, the Tribe was 17-for-28 from the field in the half.

The Dragons play four of their next five games away from home. The stretch begins on Thursday night when Drexel plays at Towson at 7 p.m.
