Men's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short to High Point in Home Opener
11/18/2015 8:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia – The Dragons battled back from a 10-point second-half deficit to tie the game, but the comeback bid fell short in their home opener to High Point on Wednesday night, 75-66. Drexel had its chances but shot just 50 percent from the free throw line in the game.
High Point took a 58-50 with just under 11 minutes to play after a lay-up by Adam Weary. That would be the Panthers last points for a stretch of almost four minutes as the Dragons began their comeback. High Point held the lead at 64-61 but Drexel was able to tie it when Tavon Allen hit a three-pointer, his sixth of the game, at the 4:12 mark. The momentum appeared to shift in Drexel's favor, but the visitors responded by closing the game on an 11-2 run and making six straight free throws down the stretch to pick up the road win.
Drexel shot 55 percent from the floor, but managed to make just 14 of its 28 free throw attempts. Four Dragons scored in double figures. Allen led the way with 21 points. He made his first six long-range attempts and finished 6-for-8 from behind the arc. Allen also had five boards and three blocks. Terrell Allen and Rashann London each added 11 points. Kazembe Abif finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Abif was 5-for-5 from the floor.
John Brown led everyone with 23 points for High Point. He was 8-for-13 from the floor and led the team with a game-high nine rebounds. Weary added 18 points, while Lorenzo Cugini chipped in with 12 points. The Panthers were 9-for-11 from the foul line in the second half after shooting just 50 percent in the first half. They committed just nine turnovers, while forcing Drexel into 17 miscues.
The Dragons (0-2) return to the DAC on Saturday with an afternoon matchup against Monmouth.
