Strong Second Half Propels No. 25 South Carolina Past Drexel

Columbia, S.C. - The 25th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks opened the second half with an 11-0 run and stayed unbeaten with a 79-54 win against Drexel on Tuesday night at Colonial Life Arena. South Carolina stayed unbeaten and is now 9-0. The Dragons fell to 1-7.
The Gamecocks shot a blistering 67 percent in the second half and held Drexel to just three points in the first 8:57 of the second half. The Dragons made just one of their first 14 shots in the second half and never recovered. Allen led the team with 18 points and had four assists. He was just 6-for-18 from the floor but had a pair of three-pointers. Mojica added 13 points and was 3-for-6 from long range. They were the only two Dragons in double figures. Drexel finished the game at 35 percent shooting but again struggled from the line, making just nine of 19 attempts.
Drexel played an inspired first half as the game was close for the first 20 minutes. Tavon Allen had 11 points in the opening frame to lead Drexel. Mojica came off the bench to score eight, including a pair of three-pointers. The Dragons were forced to play down a man from the opening minutes as Rodney Williams went out with an injury just three minutes into the game. Williams did not return. South Carolina led at the break, 32-28, and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
P.J. Dozier led the way for USC with 16 points. Sindarius Thornwell added 13 points and five assists and Michael Carrera scored 10 points. The Gamecocks outrebounded the Dragons, 41-22, and blocked nine shots. USC finished the game shooting 54 percent from the floor and made six of its 12 three-pointers.
The Dragons return to Philadelphia to play two more games before taking a few days off for the holiday break. Drexel will host the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday at the Palestra. On Dec. 22, the Dragons will host Penn at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
