PHILADELPHIA – After giving up the first four points of the extra period, the Dragons went on a 7-0 run to take the lead and held on for the 53-52 overtime win against Penn on Tuesday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Drexel has now won six straight in its series against Penn.
The Dragons went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line in the overtime, making the free ones when it counted to keep the game in hand. Rashann London scored five of his 14 in the extra session. The Quakers had two shots to win it on their final possession of overtime, but Drexel finally knocked the ball away to secure the win.
Down 32-28 at the 15:29 mark in the second half, the Dragons went on an 8-0 run and held Penn scoreless for a stretch of eight and a half minutes to take control. The Dragons could not pull away, though, and the Quakers hung around. Penn stayed within striking distance and took the lead when Mike Auger hit a baby hook in the lane, got fouled and hit the free throw to give his team the 42-41 advantage with 1:24 to play.
After a Kazembe Abif free throw, Penn took the two-point lead when Antonio Woods blew by his man down the right side of the lane for the lay-up with 43 seconds left. Out of a timeout, Tavon Allen was fouled going up for a shot in the lane and hit both from the charity stripe to tie the game at 44-44. Woods' shot as time was winding down was off the mark. Abif finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Woods had a game-high 17 points on 6-for-15 shooting.
In what was a physical game by both teams, the Dragons came away with the rebounding advantage, 45-36. They were led by Abif's 14 boards, and got eight from Mohamed Bah. Drexel grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, turning them into 16 second chance points. Penn was led on the boards by seven-footer Darien Nelson-Henry, who had 12 rebounds to go along with his 10 points. The Quakers beat out Drexel in the paint, 34-12.
Both teams struggled from the floor and from the line all game until Drexel hit its free throws late. Penn shot 37.7 percent from the floor and 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from three. The Dragons outlasted the Quakers despite shooting 29.1 percent from the field and 6-for-18 (33.3 percent) from deep. At the line, Penn went 9-for-14, while Drexel went 15-for-23, including the 6-for-6 in overtime. Penn also finished with 13 turnovers to Drexel's 11.
Allen led the Dragons with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field. The senior is now one point shy of 1,000 for his career. He is also one three pointer shy of tying Michael Thompson for 16th all-time at Drexel. Allen currently has 113.
Drexel (2-8) improves to 2-1 over Philadelphia Big 5 teams. The Dragons will travel to New Rochelle, New York on Monday for a 7 p.m. game against Iona.
