PHILADELPHIA – Drexel men's and women's tennis picked up another set of wins on Sunday to open the month of February, beating Morgan State 4-1 and 6-1, respectively, at the Drexel Armory.
The women stay perfect at 5-0 on the year, the team's best start since it won the first nine dual matches in 2008-09. The men improve to 6-1 in 2014-15.
"Both teams did exactly what we talked about. The energy level was very high, and we looked pumped and wanted to win it more," head coach Mehdi Rhazali. "The communication in doubles was very good, the returns got better than last week's and the serves were consistent. We really just need to keep up the discipline level because if we play like we did today, we have a shot at doing big things this year."
Drexel women opened the day and set the tone for the Dragons. Nicole Pivonka and Clary Rodriguez Cruz continued their strong start to the year, picking up a 6-0 win. The pairs of Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence as well as Lea Winkler and Kendra bunch also grabbed doubles victories, 6-2 and 6-3, respectively.
In singles play, the upper classmen, Pivonka and Bowsher, each won to continue the Dragons' strong day on the court. Pivonka won 6-2, 6-4, while Bowsher took her match, 6-2, 6-0. The underclassmen also played tough on their way to victories. Providence continued her freshman year with a 6-3, 7-6 (7), and Winkler dominated her way to a 6-0, 6-3 win. Fiorella Coria finished off the win with an 8-2 victory of her own.
Later in the day, the men continued the string of success with the 4-1 team win. Alex Fioravante and Xabier Saavedra took care of business against the Bears' top duo, 6-1, and Badr Ouabdelmoun and Daniel Hansen took their match, 6-4, to give the Dragons the doubles point.
In singles play, Ouabdelmoun and Fioravante each picked up another win. Ouabdelmoumen took a tough match 7-5, 7-6 (1). Fioravante beat out his Morgan State opponent, 6-4, 7-5. Senior Dan Koehler finished off the match in the six spot, 6-0, 6-0.
