Women's Tennis Advances to 8-0, Beats UMBC, 5-2

BALTIMORE – Women's tennis showed no love to University Maryland Baltimore County on Valentine's Day, beating the Terriers, 5-2. Drexel's men fell 4-0 to UMBC later Saturday night.
The Dragons' women improve to 8-0 on the year, one win short of the program's 9-0 start in 2008-09. The men are now 7-3 on the season.
"UMBC is a tough team," head coach Mehdi Rhazali said. "The women played tough and fought hard. It came down to the freshmen who played smart and handled the pressure really well. We lost to UMBC in 2013 but beat them the next two seasons. We prepared a lot and it paid off. Now we have to stay humble, disciplined and keep doing the work. I ask for a lot and the girls are giving it all and deserved the win."
To start the evening, the women grab the momentum early, taking the doubles point. Nicole Pivonka and Clary Rodriguez Cruz again put in a dominant performance, winning 6-2. Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch then took home the point for the Dragons with a 6-4 victory.
In singles play, Pivonka took care of business, 6-2, 6-4 to get the teams started. Lea Winkler battled her war through a tough three-set match to win, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. The Dragons' freshmen then finished off the match, as Ryshena Providence won, 6-4, 7-5, and Kendra Bunch won, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
The men took the court on Saturday night and had a tough match. The Dragons dropped the doubles point. Despite a hard-fought fight against a tough UMBC squad, the Blue and Gold ultimately dropped the singles portion, 0-3.
Drexel Tennis returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 20 at 8:30 a.m. as it hosts Villanova at the Legacy Center.
