LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Drexel wrestling team fell to Rider, 20-17 on Friday evening despite a strong effort across the board that resulted in four of the ten matches advancing to overtime.
The dual started at 184 as Alex DeCiantis earned a technical fall over the Broncs' Ali Yildiz to give Drexel an early 5-0 lead. Brandon Litten followed, taking the 197 match to overtime but ultimately dropped a 3-1 decision to Rider's Don McNeil. Next, Joey Goodhart gave the Dragons an 8-3 lead as he secured a 4-3 overtime victory in the heavyweight match.
Rider struck back in the next two matches, earning wins at 125 and 133 to give the Broncs their first advantage of the dual, 10-8. David Pearce came out next and won a 7-5 overtime decision over Rider's Chuck Zeisloft to put the Dragons back in the lead by one point. Matthew Cimato fell to No. 19 B.J. Clagon at 149 which gave the Broncs a 14-11 advantage, but Noel Blanco tied things up at 14-14 as he defeated the nationally ranked Chad Walsh 3-1 in overtime at 157 with just two matches to go.
Rider's Conor Brennan ultimately solidified the Broncs victory as he earned a pin over Michael Paccione in the 165 match. Stephen Loiseau made a last effort at 174 with a 4-3 win over Steve Nelson, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit that Rider had created.
With the loss, the Dragons move to 6-10 overall while the Broncs improve to 11-6 on the season.
The Dragons return to action tomorrow when they travel to face EIWA opponent Franklin & Marshall at 7:00 p.m. Drexel leads Franklin & Marshall in the all-time series, 14-2. Last season, the Dragons defeated the Diplomats, 25-11 in Philadelphia. Be sure to follow @DrexelWrestling on Twitter for live updates from tomorrow's matches.
