Dragons Fall in Opening Round of CAA Tournament to Charleston

Baltimore, Md. – The College of Charleston defeated Drexel, 56-48, in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship at Royal Farm Arena. The Dragons ended their season with an 11-19 record.
Drexel remained in the lead all the way until the 9:28 mark of the second half. The Cougars took the lead for good when Cameron Barry sank two free throws with 2:20 to go. He would score again on a lay-in and then converted two more free throws as the Cougars took a 52-46 lead with 33 seconds to play. Charleston converted their next four throws and went on to the victory. The depleted Drexel line-up ran out of gas down the stretch, making just one of its last seven field goal attempts in the final five minutes.
The Dragons and Cougars played a tightly-contested first half, with Drexel holding a 29-24 lead at the break. Drexel led the entire way, but the Cougars were never far behind. Freddie Wilson gave Drexel an eight-point lead midway through the first half as he nailed a three-pointer from the wing. Charleston chipped away as the Dragons were saddled by foul trouble. Bruiser Flint's team was forced to go to three forwards at one point as Rashann London picked up his third foul with a little more than three minutes to go in the half. Wilson and Tavon Allen combined for 21 of the team's 29 first half points. The Dragons' defense held the Cougars to just 33 percent shooting in the half.
Wilson led Drexel with 17 points. The senior, playing in his final game, was 6-for-13 from the floor and had four three-pointers. Tavon Allen added 15 points.
Barry led Charleston with 19 points, The Cougars shot just 35 percent in the game, but made 10 of their 12 free throws in the second half to secure the win.
Charleston will move on to play UNCW in the CAA Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.
