WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Drexel Tennis' women fell to No. 2 College of Charleston Friday afternoon, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships hosted by the College of William & Mary.
The Dragons played the Cougars tough, as Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch won in third doubles, 8-2. In singles, the Blue and Gold forced three three-set matches. Still it was not enough to overcome a tough Charleston squad.
Beginning the day with doubles, Drexel got on the board first with the win from Winkler and Bunch. However, matching 8-3 losses from Nicole Pivonka and Clary Rodriguez Cruz as well as Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence tipped the doubles point in Charleston's favor.
In singles play, which was interrupted by the weather causing a delay, Drexel got some strong performances but Charleston came out on top. Pivonka, Bowsher and Winkler all forced three-set matches. Pivonka jumped out of the gates fast, winning the first set, 7-5, before dropping the second, 6-2. Her match would remain unfinished. Bowsher fought back to win the second set, 6-3, after dropping the first, 6-1, but her match also remained unfinished. Winkler won the first set, 6-3, but her Charleston opponent battled back to win the match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 overall.
Freshmen Rodriguez Cruz, Providence and Bunch each got valuable conference championship experiences under their belts. Rodriguez Cruz fell 4-6, 6-4, while Bunch fought hard, but fell 5-7, 2-6. Providence was up 4-1 in the second set after dropping the first in a tiebreak, but her match remained unfinished.
The Dragons finished the 2014-15 season 15-3 overall, the best season in terms of number of wins and winning percentage in program history.
Drexel's men fell to Elon, 4-0, later in the evening.
