Women's Tennis Makes Quick Work of La Salle Friday in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA – Following the Drexel men's team sweep of St. Francis (N.Y.), Drexel Tennis' women countered with a sweep of their own on Friday at the Armory over La Salle, 7-0.

It was a dominant performance from the Dragons in both singles and doubles, as they allowed the Explorers to win only six games the entire match.

The Dragons jumped out to the lead by shutting out the doubles point and never looked back. Honami Yazawa and Clary Rodriguez Cruz continued to play like the team's top pair, grabbing the 6-0 shutout. At No. 2, the strong pairing of Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch earned a 6-0 win, while Ryshena Providence and Erin Bowsher finished the Explorers at No. 3 with a 6-0 victory.

In singles, it was more of the same for Drexel. Yazawa cruised past the Explorers' top player, Ally Santarelli, 6-2, 6-2. She was followed by Bowsher, who earned a 6-1, 6-1 win, and Rodriguez Cruz, who swept Kathryn Thomas, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4, Winkler made quick work of Madison Gillian, 6-0, 6-0. Bunch and Providence took the same route at Nos. 5 and 6, each winning, 6-0, 6-1.

The Dragons are scheduled to return to the court at the Philly Six Invite at Legacy Center on Sunday. Stay tuned for weather-related updates as the impending weather nears.
