Philadelphia, Pa. – Tavon Allen poured in a career-high 33 points, but Hofstra's second half comeback proved to be too much as the Pride defeated Drexel, 70-64, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Hofstra made 22 of 25 free throws in the second half to remain atop the top spot in the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Dragons (3-18, 1-9 CAA) led by as many as 13 early in the second half after Tavon Allen knocked down a jump shot. The Pride (16-6, 8-2 CAA) answered with a 10- 0 run to make it a game. Juan'ya Green started the run with a three-point play and ended it with a pair of free throws. In between, Ameen Tanksley hit a three-pointer from the top of the key and scored on a lay-up. The game was close the rest of the way. The Pride took the lead at the 5:45 mark when graduate student Denton Koon sank a three-pointer. Hofstra got the lead to five, but Drexel battled back. Allen hit a three-pointer to tie it up at 64-64 with just 1:21 to play. After a pair of Green free throws put Hofstra ahead by two, the Dragons committed an untimely turnover that led to a pair of free throws by Tanksley to put Hofstra ahead by four. Drexel then missed four shots in one possession and the Pride iced the game when Rokas Gustys made two more freebies with 20 seconds to play.
Drexel played well in the first half and led by as many as 11 points in the early going. The Pride went 0-for-12 from behind the arc in the first half and shot just 30 percent from the field. Hofstra ended the half on an 8-3 spurt and went into the locker room down, 30-24.
Allen had 20 of his 33 points in the second half. He finished the day 12-for-24 from the floor and drained six three-pointers, which tied his career-high. Unfortunately for the Dragons, Allen was the only player who shot the ball well. The rest of the team shot just 12-for-50 (.240) from the floor on the day. He now has 1,126 career points, which tied him with Bashir Mason for 24th on Drexel's career scoring list.
Sammy Mojica picked up his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the game. Kazembe Abif chipped in with 11 points. Drexel committed a season-low five turnovers. The Dragons also grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, but only turned those boards into 10 points.
Green and Tanksley led the Pride with 15 points. Green was 9-for-9 from the line and also had seven rebounds and five assists. Rokas Gustys finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Koon had 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Dragons conclude their four-game home stand on Thursday night when James Madison comes to town. JMU won the first meeting of the season in Harrisonburg. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
