Williams' Career High Not Enough as Rutgers Downs Drexel
11/13/2016 5:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Piscataway, N.J. - Rodney Williams scored a career-high 24 points, but it was not enough as Rutgers used a big run to end the first half and went on to defeat the Dragons, 87-66. Drexel fell to 0-2 on the season, while the Scarlet Knights are now 2-0.
The Dragons fell behind early, but were able to stay fairly close for most of the first half. Kari Jonsson nailed a three-pointer with 4:24 to play in the half to make it a 28-26 game. However, that would turn out to be the Dragons last bucket of the half. Rutgers went on a 13-0 run during that span to take control of the contest at 41-26. Rodney Williams had 13 points in the first half to lead the Dragons.
Drexel tried on a few occasions to cut the deficit to single digits, but each time they got close, the Scarlet Knights answered. Rutgers made five second-half three-pointers and got the lead to as many as 25 late in the game. The Knights also dominated on the glass, outrebounding Drexel by 27 boards.
Williams was 10-for-17 from the field in the game and made all four of his free throw attempts. Freshman Kurk Lee finished with 14 points and six assists. Sammy Mojica scored 10 points, all late in the game, after struggling from the floor early. The Dragons shot 38 percent in the game.
Rutgers was led by Jonathan Laurent and Nigel Johnson, who each scored 15 points. Six different Rutgers players had at least 10 points.
Drexel will play its first home game on Friday night when Hartford visits the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 7 p.m. It will be the second of four games in the Scarlet Knight Shootout. Drexel will finish the event with road games at North Texas and at Niagara before the Thanksgiving holiday.
