PHILADELPHIA – It was a successful opening weekend for the Drexel women's basketball team, as the Dragons followed up their season-opening victory over Penn State with a dominating 69-44 win over Delaware State at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. Drexel now sits at 2-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season, when the Dragons opened with five consecutive victories.
Sarah Curran led all scorers with 18 points, and helped the Dragons put the game away by scoring 11 consecutive points by herself at the end of the second and beginning of the third quarters. She added seven assists, matching career high. Bailey Greenberg and Jessica Pellechio each netted 10 points, with Greenberg chipping in seven rebounds and Pellechio pulling down eight.
Overall, it was a very balanced scoring attack from the Dragons with 10 players getting in the scorebook and seven of those netting at least four points. Meghan Creighton chipped in six points to go along with six rebounds and six assists. Sara Woods scored seven points, one off her career high, and Aubree Brown added four points and three steals.
A pair of Dragons made their collegiate debuts on Sunday afternoon. Niki Metzel played nine minutes, scoring six points in her first action with Drexel. Ana Ferariu played eight minutes and hit a three-pointer with her only shot attempt of the afternoon. She added a pair of steals and a block. Tereza Kracikova scored three points off the bench and Kelsi Lidge added two to go along with four steals, part of 21 Delaware State turnovers forced by the Dragons.
After the Lady Hornets netted the first points of the game, the Dragons answered and never looked back. Bailey Greenberg stepped into her first-career three-pointer from the right wing to edge the Dragons out in front, then followed on the next possession with her second-career trey to make it 6-2. Drexel never trailed again.
Greenberg was an early catalyst for the Dragons, hitting four of her five attempts in the first half. Overall, it was a balanced scoring attack that led Drexel to a double-digit lead in the opening half, as all eight players who got into the game in the first 20 minutes scored at least two points. Sarah Curran closed the half with seven straight, part of a 9-0 Drexel run to give her nine points before intermission and stretch the Dragons' lead to 33-16.
The run continued after halftime, with Curran netting the first four points of the second half to put Drexel ahead by 21. They would lead by at least that much the rest of the way.
The Dragons played good team offense all afternoon, handing out 21 total assists on 25 made field goals. Nine different players had an assist for Drexel, which shot 25-for-60 (41.7 percent) from the floor and knocked down nine three-pointers.
After opening with a pair of home victories, the Dragons will now hit the road for their next contest. Drexel will head to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt on Wednesday in the second-ever meeting between the two programs. The game will tip off at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
