EASTON, Pa. - The Drexel men's basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat Lafayette on Wednesday night, 74-70. Miles Overton's lay-up with 30 seconds to play gave the Dragons a lead and Lafayette had two three-point attempts in the final seconds come up short.
Drexel's come back started early in the second half as the Dragons made a few baskets and the Leopards missed some free throws. Lafayette made just three of its first 10 free throws in the second half and missed a pair of one-and-ones. The Dragons scored on three straight possessions to make it a 47-42 game midway through the second half. The score remained close as neither team could really make a run until the closing minutes. Drexel trimmed the lead to one on a Kurk Lee lay-up with 6:45 to play, but Lafayette answered with a pair of three pointers to make it a seven-point game.
The Dragons chipped away and then took their first lead of the game when Overton found Sammy Mojica in the corner for a three-pointer, making it a 70-68 ball game. Lafayette's Nick Lindner tied it with a pair of free throws, but Drexel went ahead for good when Overton drove to the lane and scored from five feet out. Lafayette turned the ball over on the inbound pass and John Moran went to the line. He missed two, but Rodney Williams tipped the ball to keep it alive and Moran went back to the line after a foul. He made one of two. Lafayette had a chance to tie it on the final possession, but Lindner and then Kyle Stout each missed three-pointers and Overton was fouled on the rebound. He made one of his two attempts and the Dragons escaped with the win. Drexel took care of the ball in the second half, committing just three turnovers after giving it back 12 times in the first half.
Williams and Lee led the Dragons with 14 points. Williams also had seven rebounds. Overton chipped in with a season-high 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Mojica added 10 points and had three assists. The Dragons shot 58 percent in the final 20 minutes as they picked up the come-from-behind win. Lafayette was led by Lindner, who scored a game-high 21 points. Paulius Zalys added 16, with 10 coming in the first half. He had four three-pointers. The Leopards, who led 38-24 at the break, finished the day 14-for-30 from the free throw line. They came into the game shooting 69 percent from the charity stripe.
The Dragons will play the last of this three game road swing on Saturday night. Drexel will make its first appearance at High Point when it takes on the Panthers at 7 p.m. The team will then be off for a week before it takes on Saint Joseph's at the DAC.
