PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew won the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup for the sixth year in a row Saturday when it hosted the 50th annual Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The regatta is named in honor of Dr. Thomas Kerr, the founding coach of Drexel Crew and former team physician.
Drexel took home six gold medals on the day. In addition to the men's varsity eight, the Dragons won gold in the men's second varsity eight, third varsity eight, freshmen eight, women's varsity four and pair.
The Dragons men's varsity eight, rowing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, took home the gold with a winning time of 5:41.88, nearly six seconds faster than second-place Delaware in the grand final. The boat also posted a 5:42.85 in its heat.
Also winning golds were three other men's boats and two women's boats. The men's second varsity eight rowed in the Lois Krall boat to a time of 5:49.52, dominating the field by almost 10 full seconds. The freshmen eight and third varsity eight closed out the day's sweep for the men's eights. The freshmen eight, rowing in the Joseph Greipp boat, crossed the finish line with a winning time of 5:51.14, while the third varsity eight took gold in the Annette Pennoni with a time of 6:01.28.
On the women's side, the Dragons continued to find success in the women's varsity four. In the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, the four raced to victory with a time of 7:23.13, outlasting the second-place Lafayette crew's time of 7:26.62. Also winning gold for the women was the varisty pair A boat Aubrie Lincks and Rachel Frank, which rowed a winning time of 8:12.61.
The Dragons also posted top three times in the women's pair (C boat), men's freshmen four, men's varsity pair (A boat) and women's varsity eight. The women's pair C boat took third with a time of 8:33.52 in the same final as the gold medal-winning A. In the men's freshmen four race, Drexel's Toby Oxholm boat finished at 6:57.37, less than seven seconds behind the winning Delaware crew. In the men's pair, the A, which rowed in the Kephart boat, took second with a time of 7:15.25, behind Lafayette's 7:07.29. Finally, the women's varsity eight had its bid for a sixth Lela H. Kerr Cup in seven years come up short, finishing third with a time of 6:42.57 as Temple took the gold with a time of 6:36.16.
The Dragons will return to the Schuylkill next weekend at the Bergen and Kelly Cups hosted by Saint Joseph's.
History & Origins
The Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until 1968. He also served as the crew's team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oared boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931.
The winners of the men's varsity eight race will be awarded the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup. The winners of the women's varsity eight race will be awarded the Lela H. Kerr Cup named in honor of Dr. Kerr's wife.
