HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – Drexel Crew's run at the Henley Royal Regatta came to a close Friday as the varsity four fell to Oxford Brookes University on the River Thames.
The Dragons' four finished 2 1/4 lengths behind the crew from the United Kingdom on Friday. Thursday's win by the varsity four, which came by two lengths, was the first win by a Drexel men's four at Henley in program history. The Dragons will continue their quest for the Prince Albert Cup on Friday at 3:40 a.m. EST when they race against Oxford Brookes University.
Drexel's varsity eight saw its successful season -- and the careers of five seniors -- come to an end after falling to the University of California, Berkeley by a length and a half. However, Thursday's loss came after making history on Wednesday when the Dragons beat University College, Dublin by 2 1/4 lengths for the first win by a Drexel men's boat at Henley in program history.
This year's edition of the Henley Royal Regatta is one of the largest in the event's history. The field includes a record 629 crews from a record 27 different countries. Also among the competitors are crews warming up for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which begin on Aug. 5, as well as some of the top junior teams in the world.
