Women's Tennis Cruises Past Fordham Wednesday at Legacy, 6-1

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's tennis team turned in a strong performance Wednesday in a 6-1 victory over Fordham at Legacy Center.

With the victory the Dragons advanced to 3-0 on the early season. In the match, senior Lea Winkler became the fifth Drexel women's player to reach 50 career singles wins, tying Zeynep Mafa for fourth in program history in the process. Winkler also tied Erin Bowsher for third in program history with 48 doubles wins.

The Dragons began the morning by sweeping doubles play to earn the point. Ryshena Providence and Clary Rodriguez Cruz teamed up to down Carina Ma and Estelle Wong in the top spot, 6-3, followed by Ghita Benhadi and Kendra Bunch cruising past Maia Balce and Gianna Insogna at No. 2, 6-2. Winkler and Honami Yazawa closed out doubles with a 6-3 win over Mayu Sato and Destiny Grunin.

Drexel carried the momentum into singles play to ultimately put away the Rams. Yazawa breezed to a 6-2, 6-1, win over Ma at No. 1, while Bunch fought to a three-set win over Wong, 7-5, 5-7, 11-9, at the third spot. The Dragons cruised in the bottom half of the draw as Winkler took care of Sato, 7-6 (5), 6-4, followed by Rodriguez Cruz downing Insogna, 6-2, 6-2, and Anisiya Simpson earning a straight-set, 6-4, 6-2, win over Grunin.

The Dragons will return to action when they host Georgetown on Friday at RiverWinds in West Deptford, N.J.
