NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Drexel men's tennis team has wrapped up play at the ITA Regionals at Yale University, and with that has completed its fall schedule for the 2017-18 season. Sinan Orhon and Hamza Laalej each competed in the main draw for singles play, while Orhon and Bernard Tefel joined Balaji Lakshmanan and Xandy Hammitt in the doubles bracket.
Neither Drexel singles player was able to advance in the singles draw. Laalej fell to Luke Gamble of Princeton in the first round, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Orhon earned a bye into the second round, but was defeated there, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 by Javier Retrepo of Marist.
In doubles play, the Dragons did get a victory from the duo of Orhon and Tefel. They knocked out Aleks Huryn and Noah Makarone of Penn, 8-1 in the opening round. The second round would spell the end of the road for them, however as they were defeated 8-5 by Max Flienger and Peter Conkin of Dartmouth. Lakshmanan and Hammitt were taken out in a dramatic match in the first round, 8-7 by Luca Sucevic and Andrei Crapcenko of St. John's.
The Dragons will now enjoy three months off before resuming play for the spring season on Jan. 19 at the VCU Invitational in Richmond, Va.
