Kelly Bows Out; Main Draw Action Begins Saturday
Friday, Oct. 6
PHILADELPHIA - Drexel squash senior Atticus Kelly bowed out of the qualifying draw Thursday night at the 2017 U.S. Open Squash Championships presented by Macquarie Investment Management at the Kline & Specter Squash Center.
Kelly faced a stiff test, going up against Mohamed Reda of Egypt in the first round of the qualifying draw. Playing on his home court at Drexel in front of a supportive home crowd, which included Drexel University president John Fry, Kelly used the energy to fight to five points in the first set. Reda, though, would be too much to handle, winning in straight sets, 11-5, 11-3, 11-2.
"I was pretty nervous going on there, but the crowd was great," Kelly told U.S. Open Squash after the match. "And what an experience, I really enjoyed it."
Winners of Thursday's qualifying draw first round will play Friday for spots in the main draw. Competition in the main draw begins Saturday at Drexel's Kline & Specter Squash Center and the glass court in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Tickets information can be found at www.usopensquash.com/tickets. Drexel University students, staff and faculty are free to attend with their Dragon Card.
