PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack Monday night to put away Arcadia at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 95-81.
Drexel (1-1) jumped on the Knights from the opening tip, never ceded the lead the whole night and cruised to the victory. The Knights, to their credit, never let the gap grow too wide and fought to the final buzzer. Drexel had five guys in double figures and pushed the pace for most of the 40 minutes on the night.
Drexel quickly grew a double-digit lead shortly after the first media timeout, thanks in part to two early threes from freshman Jarvis Doles, who got his first career start. The Dragons kept their foot on the gas pedal and found the hot hand in Troy Harper. The Philadelphia native was able to slash his way to the basket and get to the rim, scoring 15 of his 17 points in the first half. He also went a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw line. Harper's ability to get to the basket along with the Dragons' early accuracy from deep led them to a 51-42 halftime lead.
After the half, Tramaine Isabell jump-started his game and scored 15 of his game-high 22 points. The Missouri transfer showed an array of offensive skills, both scoring and passing. Drexel continued to push the pace, as Isabell found Sammy Mojica for a corner three before Austin Williams finished two plays at the rim midway through the second half. After a Mojica tip-in, Isabell scored six straight, four of which came from the line, for the Dragons to give them a 21-point lead with 9:20 to play. He finished 11 for 14 from the charity stripe. The Dragons would go on to cruise the rest of the way to the 95-81 victory.
The Dragons had five guys score in double figures, led by Isabell, who finished with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists in his team debut. Harper added 17 points and eight rebounds. Kurk Lee ended with 14 points and four assists, while Mojica finished with 13 points, including three three-pointers, and five assists. Williams chipped in with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting. He's now 12-for-14 from the field through two games. As a team, the Dragons shot 30 for 59 (50.8 percent) from the field, including 10 for 24 from deep, to Arcadia's 42.2 percent overall. Drexel assisted on 17 of 30 made baskets. The Dragons also finished 25 of 31 from the free throw line (80.6 percent). Arcadia had four players score in double figures, led by Da'Kquan Davis, who had 18 points.
The Dragons will be on the road for their next four games, the next three of which will come at the Paradise Jam in Lynchburg, Va. Drexel opens play at the Paradise Jam on Friday against Houston at 2:30 p.m.
