PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's squash team is poised to take a big step forward in 2017-18. Following a second straight 'B' Division Kurtz Cup runner-up finish a year ago, the Dragons' strong freshmen class could elevate the program's performance. The Dragons will open the 2017-18 season this weekend at the Pennsylvania State Classic as they host No. 23 Dickinson on Saturday and head across Chestnut Street to No. 2 Penn on Sunday.
Preseason Rankings
The Dragons enter the year ranked No. 9 in the country in the College Squash Association Dunlop Women's Preseason Team Rankings. The No. 9 ranking is the best preseason ranking in program history and tied for the program's best ranking ever. Drexel closed the 2016-17 season ranked No. 10 following another strong Kurtz Cup performance. The Dragons are expected to fight for a top-eight position and a spot in the 'A' Division Howe Cup.
2017-18 Schedule
After playing a majority of their matches on the road last season, the Dragons will play 11 of their 16 schedule matches at the Kline & Specter Squash Center. The season starts this weekend at the Pennsylvania State Classic against Dickinson and at Penn. The Dragons will the host five straight matches, including Columbia (Nov. 18), Trinity (Nov. 19), Yale (Dec. 2), Williams (Dec. 3) and Princeton (Dec. 7) to close out the 2017 portion of the schedule.
Drexel returns in the New Year on Jan. 6 at Stanford. Following a home match against Franklin & Marshall on Jan. 14, the Dragons will play three straight on the road, including at Virginia (Jan. 20), at Dartmouth (Jan. 27) and at Harvard (Jan 28). Drexel closes the regular season with four straight at home, including Cornell (Jan. 31), George Washington (Feb. 9), St. Lawrence (Feb. 10) and Middlebury (Feb. 11).
Men's Team Championships will be held on Feb. 16-18 in Cambridge, Mass. The season concludes on March 2-4 in Washington, D.C. at the Individual Championships.
2017-18 Roster
Head coach John White is back at the helm of the Drexel program for his seventh season. White added Theo Woodward to the coaching staff as an assistant coach in the offseason. Woodward made his way to Drexel from Dartmouth.
The two are tasked with coaching a women's squad poised for a breakthrough. Hayley Hughes and Ryan Morgan are the top returning players for the Blue & Gold. Hughes was an All-American in 2015-16 and finished last season ranked No. 36 in the country. Morgan played the majority of her matches out of the top ladder position and finished with a team-best ranking of No. 24 nationally.
Sophomore Anna Hughes and juniors Apoorva Addepalli and Fiona Power logged significant playing time a year ago and will again challenge for spots in the lineup. The Dragons' freshmen class is perhaps its strongest yet, including Mariam Kamal, who will immediately slot into the top half of the ladder. Hannah Blatt, Rebecca Low, Emma MacGillivray, Ona Prokes and Stephanie Ryan will also challenge for spots in various parts of the Drexel lineup and make an early impact.
