12/2/2017 5:51:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia - Tramaine Isabell scored a career-high 35 points and Sammy Mojica added 22 points as Drexel defeated Rider at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 89-77. The win evened Drexel's record at 4-4, while the Broncs dropped to 5-3.
Drexel controlled the game most of the way, but the Broncs chipped away and cut the lead to 76-74 with 3:29 to play when Tyere Marshall banked in a shot. The Dragons answered with a 5-0 run, keyed by an Alihan Demir three-pointer. After Frederick Scott made one of two from the line with just under two to play, Drexel got a huge three-pointer when Kurk Lee found Mojica in the corner as the shot clock was expiring. Mojica drained it and after a few stops, Drexel made five in a row to clinch the win for Coach Spiker's squad.
Isabell was outstanding for the Dragons all night. The junior was 11-for-18 from the floor and knocked down four three-pointers. He also grabbed 13 rebounds and had three steals. Mojica was 6-for-6 from the line and eclipsed his previous career-high of 20 points. Austin Williams chipped in with 12 points and swatted three shots. Sophomore Kurk Lee played well scoring nine points, grabbing seven rebounds and handing out six assists. Drexel finished the night shooting 49 percent and made 25 of its 29 free throws.
Marshall led Rider with 23 points and 12 rebounds. He was 11-for-13 from the floor. Dimencio Vaughn added 20. The Drexel defense did a good job of holding Jordan Allen to 10 points and Stevie Jordan to nine.
In an entertaining first half, the Dragons went on an early 10-0 run and led for most of the frame. Isabell and Williams combined for 23 points in the opening 20 minutes. Isabell was 5-for-9 from the floor, while Williams was 3-for-4 and made all of his four free throw attempts. The Dragons, who shot 46 percent from the floor and cleaned up on the glass, opened up a 13-point first half lead, but the Broncs rallied. They ended the half on a 15-4 run and went to the break up by two points as Devin Eke nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer giving the Broncs the advantage, 41-39.
The Dragons begin a three-game road swing beginning on Thursday night. Drexel visits La Salle at Gola Arena beginning a 7 p.m. The Dragons will also play at Robert Morris and Temple before returning to the DAC on Dec. 18.
