2/16/2017 8:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Newark, Del. – Ryan Daly sank a three-pointer with :12 seconds to play gave Delaware a 68-67 win on Thursday night. Kurk Lee's desperation three-pointer as time expired from about 20 feet missed as the Hens split the season series.
Drexel (9-19, 3-12) tied the contest at 61-61 when Sammy Mojica sank a three-pointer with 2:32 to play. Delaware (12-16, 5-10) answered and opened up a four-point cushion with 1:38 to play on a pair of Daly free throws. Drexel battled back and hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions sandwiched around a Delaware offensive foul. Lee hit the first and John Moran hit the next one with just :32 seconds on the clock. After a timeout, Daly sank what proved to be the game-winning three from the left wing. Daly finished with game-highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds.
The Dragons had their chances to pull out the game despite struggling with the ball most of the night. Four Drexel players had at least three turnovers and the team finished the night with 20 miscues. That led to 28 points for the Blue Hens. The Dragons shot well from deep and that kept them in the game. As a team, Drexel was 11-for-24 from deep. Lee had five three-pointers, while Major Canady, Mojica and Moran each had two.
The Dragons got off to a rough start, turning the ball over seven times in the first eight minutes. That assisted the Blue Hens in jumping out to a 15-8 lead. Drexel would answer that with an 11-0 run. The stretch started with a Lee four-point play and concluded with a Moran three-pointer. The rest of the half was back and forth as the Blue Hens took a 32-30 lead at the break. The Dragons ended the half with 10 turnovers, but were still in the game as they shot 5-for-10 from long range.
Lee led the Dragons with 21 points. The freshman also had five rebounds and four assists. His second assist of the night gave him 139, which set the Drexel single-season record for assists by a freshman. He broke the mark previously set by Drexel great Michael Anderson. Rodney Williams finished with 17 points and was 7-for-11 from the floor. Mohamed Bah came off the bench to tie a career-high with nine rebounds, while Canady had a season-high seven points in 23 minutes. Canady and Moran were both in the starting line-up for the first time this year.
The Dragons return home for their final two home games. Drexel will host Elon on Saturday and then face James Madison on Senior Night next Thursday. The Dragons close the regular season on Feb. 25 at the College of Charleston.
